Man attacked in racist assault

Date published: 24 September 2010

An Asian man had his nose and jaw broken in a racist attack.

Between 2.30pm and 3.15pm on Monday (20 September 2010), the victim, a 27-year-old man, was walking along Church Lane in Rochdale, when he was set upon by a group of teenagers.

Near the junction of Nelson Street, he was pushed over and then kicked several times to his face and body.

One thug hit him in the face with a wrench.

During the attack, the gang of around seven or eight shouted racist abuse at their victim.

The attack only ended when a man shouted at them to stop.

The victim went to hospital where he was treated for a broken nose and jaw. He had to have stitches and has severe bruising to his face.

The offenders are described as being men aged around 19 and were wearing dark clothing and hoods up.

Detective Constable Heidi Edge, of Rochdale CID said: "This was a nasty racially-motivated assault and I would like to stress that we are taking this very seriously and doing everything we can to identify those responsible.

"There is a lot of work being done in our communities to tackle racism and violence and ensure Rochdale is a safe place to live and work.

"At that time of day, there may have been a lot of people who either witnessed this attack or who might have seen either the victim or a large group of youths hanging around the area.

"I would appeal to them to come forward as their information could be vital in helping us to piece together exactly what happened.

"I'd especially like the man who shouted for the attack to stop to get in touch with us as I am certain he will have very important information for us."

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4591 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
