Schools raise money for heroes

Date published: 23 September 2010

There was something for everyone at Redwood School’s Help for Heroes event today (Thursday 23 September 2010).

The fundraising event organised by Redwood School and Holy Family had a range of stalls from cakes to key ring sales.

Representatives from the armed forces and the emergency services were also in attendance to give the children an opportunity to learn, try on uniforms and more.

Out on the school playing fields was a climbing wall, tug of war, paint balling and a fun fair.

Assistant Head Teacher Kelso Peel said: “Today has gone brilliantly well.

“We decided to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity because it is something we talk about a lot, it is on the news and the children were very interested so we thought lets do something different.”

Other schools participating in the event include Redwood’s neighbours, Oulder Hill, and Holy family, Siddal Moor and Falinge Park High School.

A joint statement from the two schools read: “This is a collaboration of two schools, Redwood and Holy Family and it has been developed as part of vocational education in the spirit of community cohesion and breaking down barriers.”

All money raised will be given to Help for Heroes and the planning for the event was tied into the curriculum so that the students can develop their planning skills, problem solving and teamwork.
