Youngsters have a splashing time at the lake

A summer activity programme held at Hollingworth Lake has proved a huge hit with youngsters across the borough, with more than 300 young people taking part.

The activities were delivered by the Rochdale Youth Service, Greater Manchester Fire Service and Link4Life.

Youngsters enjoyed a number of water based activities as part of activity programme ‘Break Out.’

The programme was funded by young people themselves through the Youth Opportunities Fund.

Ed Kelly, Principal Youth Officer, who visited one of the sessions said: “It is wonderful to see so many young people from across all areas of the Borough taking part in this activity; it’s been a real success, we can’t thank the Fire Service enough for the key role they have played in making this a real success. “

The young people were took part in sailing and canoeing under full supervision and many said they would like to go back to the Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre to carry on doing these activities.

For many of the young people this was their first time doing this sort of water sport and their first time to one of Rochdale’s “hidden gems”, Hollingworth Lake.

Steve Ashworth from the Fire Service said: “All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of trying their hand at the many water activities.

“It has been really enjoyable and very rewarding for both the children and all the staff and we would look forward to doing this activity again next year.”
