Young people from across the borough are celebrating after receiving their GCSE results today (Tuesday 24 August 2010), which are the best ever set of results.

This year, 51 per cent of students gained the gold standard of five or more A* - C GCSE’s, including English and Maths, compared to 47% in 2009 and 43% in 2008.

69 per cent of students gained five A* -C GCSEs, which is a 3 per cent rise from last year’s per cent.

Sue Brown, Service Director Schools said: “Early results indicate that GCSE pass rates in the borough have continued to rise.

"This is fantastic news for our children and young people, and my particular thanks also go to staff, parents and carers.

"I am very proud of what has been achieved in our schools and look forward to hearing of future achievements and wish them all success in the future.”

Councillor Teresa Fitzsimons, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families said: “Well done to all young people across the borough who’ve achieved their results.

"This is a day of celebration for students and their teachers.

"I’d also like to thank the parents and other family members who have supported them in their success. Young people are our future and I look forward to the opening of the new sixth form college in September where they can continue their studies.”
