All smiles at Matthew Moss

Date published: 24 August 2010

A heavy downpour didn’t dampen emotions at Matthew Moss High School, with 43 per cent of students receiving 5 A-C grades including English and Maths, and with 67 per cent achieving 5 A-Cs overall - very close to the national average of 69.1 per cent.

The school is one of six in the UK that are part in the Learning Futures scheme, which aims to provide a new approach to educating pupils by making them feel fully engaged with their education.

Headmaster Andrew Raymer said: “I am very pleased. The results are in line with the school targets and I am very proud of my students.”

Mr. Raymer explained how he feels his school has a 21st century curriculum and that his leaving year is especially prepared for the future; he said the students are responsible for their own learning and are taught to think for themselves.

There were countless success stories and there were some exceptional achievers. Misal Ijaz was nervous about opening her results, but gained three A*s, eight As and one B and will be continuing her studies at Holy Cross College, Bury.

Sheima Rafiq received four A*s, seven As and one B, ad Maria Tariq gained three A*s, five As, five Bs and one C, and both will be part of the first group of students to walk through the doors of the new Rochdale Sixth Form College.

A minimum of five A-C passes, including either English Language or Mathematics, is required to be part of the first influx of students at the new sixth form. This was no problem for Awais Babar, who got three Cs, five Bs and two A*s in Science. “I’m happy with my results,” he said. “They’re far better than I needed.”
