The attack took place at about 12.35am on Saturday (14 August 2010), outside the 43-year-old man's house on Thornham New Road.

He was seen getting into an argument with two people, and when his step-son went outside to check on him, he was unconscious on the ground.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to a broken nose and a broken hand as well as cuts and bruising.

The man and woman seen speaking to him are described as white. The man was in his early 20s, of stocky build, 5ft 11in tall with medium length dark hair. He was wearing a jacket and jeans.

The woman was in her late teens, of medium build, about 5ft 5in tall with dark hair in a ponytail. She was also wearing a jacket and jeans.

Sergeant Lee Moriarty said: "This appears to be a random attack on a man who was on his way home, and this has obviously had an impact on him and his family.

"It is rare that people are attacked near their homes in Castleton and we have launched a thorough inquiry. We are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward and help us.

"Perhaps you remember seeing this man and woman in the area at this time. If you have information that could help, please call us."
