Stay off the tracks, say transport police

Date published: 10 August 2010

“Play it safe this summer and stay off the tracks.” That’s the message from the British Transport Police (BTP) in Manchester who will be working hard during the coming months to keep youngsters away from the railway.

During the first two weeks of the school holidays BTP has received more than 50 reports of youths either trespassing on the railway or throwing stones at trains.

Now, in a bid to keep the youngsters and rail users safe Chief Inspector Graham Bamford, Officer in Charge at Manchester, is warning of the possible consequences.

He said: “We have seen problems across the area, from Bolton to Poynton, with youngsters messing about on the tracks and I want them to be aware of the risks they are taking.

He added: “Anyone who trespasses onto the railway is taking a huge gamble with their own lives.

“The railway is an inherently dangerous environment, with high speed trains and electric currents, and it should never be treated as a playground or somewhere to hang about.

“This summer, stay safe and stay off the railway.

“Sadly some youngsters are also risking the lives of others by throwing stones and other objects at passing trains.

“The damage caused to trains is unacceptable however it is only through good fortune that we have not had to deal with a much more serious incident.

“I cannot over estimate the danger posed by people who get some sort of kick out of throwing things at trains.

“Even a small stone thrown at a moving train can cause serious injury if it hits a window or someone on board the train. Youths are, without doubt, putting lives at risk.”

Officers will be increasing patrols across Manchester and won’t hesitate to take action against anyone causing problems or trespassing on the railway network.

Chief Insp Bamford added: “My message is simple - stay safe and stay out of trouble.”

If you witness anyone trespassing or causing trouble on the railway call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
