Youngsters showcase their talent

Youngsters from Heywood showcased their talents at a special event held in Queen’s Park today (Sunday 8 August 2010).

‘Heywood’s got Young Talent’ was the idea of the Friends of Queens Park group and after such a great turn out and on their first talent showcase last year they decided to hold the event again this year.

Many visitors to the park gathered at the main stage with their children, pets and picnics to witness super-stardom in the making.

Singers and dancers took to the stage one by one to perform, with some children begging to take to the stage again.

Sheila Hill, Chairwoman of the Friends of Queens Park said: “Today gives youngsters a chance to perform on stage and just give them a different opportunity and a different location to show off the things that they are good at.

“If we get more youngsters involved in what is going on the park then they are more likely to respect it – that’s our theory.”

Heywood Councillor Peter Rush helped to organised the day, he said: “We are giving these people a chance to shine; we are encouraging them to show off their talent – who knows there could be an X Factor winner here.”

Ellis Marshall-Grant wowed the audience with his break-dancing moves, whilst 5-year-old Molly Brannick captured their hearts by singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

The talent on show today wasn’t judged and there was no overall winner but everybody who took part received a certificate.

“We purposely didn’t make it a talent competition because there is nothing competitive about this it is just a chance for people to see what talent there is in Heywood,” said Councillor Rush.
