Charity cycle challenge comes to Rochdale

Date published: 03 August 2010

A charity raising money to improve healthcare facilities for children in Rochdale is appealing for cyclists to test their pedal power.

MedEquip4Kids’ Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge takes place in September where more than 250 cyclists will be cycling up to 100 miles to help raise £15,000.

The money raised will help MedEquip4Kids provide medical equipment and facilities for hospitals across the North of England to ensure children and babies receive the best possible care when sick or injured.

In Rochdale, the charity has funded more than £35,000 for Rochdale Infirmary’s Children’s Unit in the last five years for equipment including oxygen saturation monitors to ensure enough oxygen is being absorbed in the lungs; and parent beds, which allow parents to sleep overnight next to their child’s bed.

Now in its sixth year, more than 1,000 fundraisers have tackled one of the Lancashire Loop’s three routes suitable for cyclists of any ability, ranging from a family-friendly 18 miles to 50 miles or 100 miles for experienced cyclists, and raised more than £65,000 for MedEquip4Kids since 2004.

The Lancashire Loop is a circular route from Cockerham, near Lancaster, and takes cyclists across rural Lancashire exploring the Ribble Valley, Bowland Fells and the Lune Valley via quiet countryside lanes and picturesque villages.

MedEquip4Kids’ fundraiser, Rose Franks, said: “The Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge is one of our biggest annual fundraising events and last year we had people from right across the region travelling to Cockerham to take part. Everybody, no matter what their cycling ability, enjoys themselves and it is a great way to see the beautiful Lancashire countryside while raising money for a great cause.”

Registration is £15 and participants must raise a minimum £45 in sponsorship. The family registration is £30 (two adults and two children) with a minimum sponsorship of £70.

The charity cycle takes place on Sunday 26 September.
