Daredevils support our heroes

Date published: 31 July 2010

Daredevils from across Rochdale took part in a bungee jump today (Saturday 31 July 2010) to raise money for two charities.

The bungee jump was the main attraction of a host of events at Littleborough Cricket Club, organised by Littleborough Fire Station to raise money for Help for Heroes and the Fire Fighters Charity.

Members of the community joined together for a day of fun where there were fairground rides, Roch Valley Radio, face painting and of course a chance to do a bungee jump.

The event was organised by fire-fighters, Lee Cropper, Paul Rourke and Craig Lord.

Lee Cropper explained the reason for the fundraising day: “We are raising money for the charities as they are both good causes, we are hoping to split the money 50-50. At the moment we can’t put a figure on how much we will raise but we hope it will be in the thousands.

“Littleborough Fire Station hasn’t had an open day for a long time so we decided we would hold one, we needed an outdoor venue because we couldn’t have done all this at the station. We decided to have the bungee jump as the main attraction and it has certainly proved popular.”

Mr Cropper added: “It has taken three months to organise and this past week has been hectic, but it has been good and it has been enjoyable – it is nice to see everything here and running smoothly.

“I think everyone is having a great time, they are all smiling.”

Ben Hughes from Rochdale completed the bungee jump in ladies underwear, he explained he did it for a bet and has raised almost £100 for charity, he said: “Help for Heroes is such as good cause and they do a lot for our country which they might not always get credit for. I loved the bungee jump; it was 100 per cent adrenaline. I was a little bit scared and nervous at first and I had butterflies, but then I started to enjoy it, it was great.”

Fun at the cricket club will continue into the night, the outdoor activities will finish 5pm and then a fundraising evening  featuring newly signed Rochdale band ‘Hidden Revolution’ will run through until midnight.

The party this evening is a ticket only event.

Update: The Fire Fighters Charity received £551.74 from its stall at the event.
