Foster carer caught on camera attacking child

Date published: 28 July 2010

A 48-year-old foster carer from Heywood has been sentenced after she was caught assaulting a young child in her care.

Glynis Liley, of Wilson Avenue, Heywood, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing at Bolton Crown Court to two offences of assault.

On Friday (23 July 2010), she was given a 12 month community order.

At the time of the offences Liley was caring for two young boys.

During the afternoon of Friday 9 January 2009, neighbours saw Liley roughly handling one of the boys and striking him across the head with a mobile phone.

Over the next three evenings the witnesses used their video camera to film Liley as she continued to assault the boy, including kicking, slapping, force feeding and hitting him over the head with a slipper.

The witness called the police and Liley was arrested for assault. The boy was taken to Fairfield Hospital to be examined and was found to have bruising on his forehead, thigh and back.

In interviews Liley denied assaulting the boy but admitted the video footage put her in a bad light.

Detective Constable Alicia Smith, of Rochdale's public protection unit, said: "Liley was in a position of trust, a position she clearly abused.

"She may not have set out to deliberately harm the child, but her rough and reckless approach to child care was far too aggressive, and completely unacceptable."
