GMP gives promise to tackle anti-social behaviour

Date published: 28 July 2010

Greater Manchester Police has given a new promise to continue tackling anti-social behaviour and working with communities to provide the best possible service.

The commitment comes as latest British Crime Survey results show the number of people who perceived there were high levels of anti-social behaviour in their area was reduced to just 15.6 per cent. It also states that over half of the people contacted in Greater Manchester said the police are doing a good job in their area at 50.5 per cent.
The survey for April 2009 to March 2010 also identified that 51.7 percent agreed that the police and local council are dealing with crime and anti-social behaviour.

And with the summer holidays here, GMP is stepping up work with communities and partner agencies to deal with anti-social behaviour. The Force has set out a Service Promise that outlines what people should expect from their police.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, responsible for citizen focus, said: "We are delighted with the results which clearly show a significant improvement in people's views of our success to tackle crime and particularly anti-social behaviour.

"We know that anti-social behaviour has a huge impact on people and is their top priority. In the past 12 months we have made a real difference, the neighbourhood policing teams are listening and taking action. During the summer holidays we will be doing all we can to help communities deal with anti-social behaviour on their streets."

A range of policing operations and activities are in place across Greater Manchester to provide alternatives to anti-social behaviour and target areas where the public have raised concerns.

ACC Shewan added: "The new Service Promise will be more than just words. It is something that all our officers and staff are going to be working to deliver every time we receive a call for help, when people have problems in their communities and when people have concerns they want to raise.

"The Policing Pledge and confidence measure became overwhelmed to monitoring, checking and bureaucracy. This Service Promise is something that we are aiming to deliver every day with every case we deal with. I know this commitment is particularly important during the challenging months ahead."

The Service Promise will be available from Police Stations and through Neighbourhood Policing Teams.
