Residential mother and baby unit gets the go ahead
Date published: 27 July 2010
Plans to turn a large house in Rochdale into a residential mother and baby unit have been given the go ahead.
The decision was made at a planning meeting held tonight (Tuesday 27 July 2010).
The large two storey dwelling located off Newbold Street which has private grounds to the front and rear will be changed to a mother and baby unit.
The unit will provide temporary accommodation for up to five new young or teenage mothers and their babies following referral from social services.
Each of the mothers and babies would have their own private bedroom whilst living areas would be communal.
Professional staff including midwives, social workers and teachers would provide 24 hour support operated on a shift basis including overnight supervision.
There is a parking provision for five to six vehicles within the site for staff use.
The plans have got to the go ahead despite concerns from local residents.
During the consultation process a petition was submitted by 20 residents who were concerned about traffic and congestion problems in the area.
Issues raised from members of the public relating to CCTV cameras on the property were also raised.
The response from the planning department on these matters was:
• There is no reason to consider this development would increase congestion in the area.
• The installation of CCTV does not necessarily mean there would be an increase in crime in the area.
The proposed development does not involve any external alterations to the appearance of the property.
