Castleton Carnival 2010

Date published: 25 July 2010

A host of colourful cars and beautifully dressed carnival queens travelled through Castleton today (Sunday 25 July 2010) for the annual Castleton Carnival.

Despite concerns from the organisers that locals had seen the best of the carnival in years gone by the streets were still lined with people who continue to love the carnival tradition.

The procession began at Chesham Avenue in Castleton, it passed through Castleton along Manchester Road and then along Bolton Road to Springfield Park where families enjoyed a number of stalls and a fun fair.

The parade was led by the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali and MP for Heywood and Middleton Jim Dobbin, they were followed by the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band, a Springhill Hospice float, carnival queens, princesses and rosebuds and a collection of Mini Coopers.

The treasurer of Castleton Carnival Frank Cryer, who appealed through Rochdale Online News on the run up to the carnival for support said: “Today has gone very well, we have struggled this year with all sorts of problems but I can’t fault the people involved. So many people have turned out and it is nice to attract people to the carnival.

“We have always been supported by local businesses who have stalls here and many people have come out to watch.”

Mr Cryer explained why this year’s carnival proceeds are being given to Springhill Hospice, he said: “It is fairly local and I think it is very important to a lot of people, everybody has a link with the hospice in one way or another and it means a lot to people.”

Mr Cryer is stepping down from his post as carnival treasurer this year but is urging people to get involved for the 2011 carnival because he would not like to see it end.
