5km race in memory of policeman
Date published: 19 July 2010
A 5km running race is being held tomorrow (Tuesday 20 July 2010) in memory of former Rochdale officer, PC Ian Terry.
PC Terry, a Greater Manchester Police firearms officer, died following a training exercise in June 2008.
He served as a response officer in Rochdale for five years from 1997 before his move to the firearms unit.
Now to commemorate his life and to raise money for charity, his former colleagues supported by former Rochdale constable Andy O'Sullivan MBE, and Rochdale’s Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent John O'Hare have organised a 5km road race tomorrow at 7pm from the Falcon Inn, Church St, Littleborough.
The route takes runners around Hollingworth Lake and all proceeds from the day will go to the Care of Police Survivors charity.
Sergeant Karl Ward, of Rochdale Division, said: “I worked with Ian during his time in Rochdale and we quickly became friends. Ian was a great man who loved his job and treated everyone he met with dignity and respect. This is our way of letting his memory live on while raising money for charity.
“His wife, Joanne, and his father, Roy, will be taking part - so it will be great to see everyone joining in and showing their support to such a fine man and a worthwhile cause.”
