Hopwood Hall College celebrates the success of its learners each month by giving two awards – one for ‘Student of the Month – Best Progress Made’ and the other for ‘Student of the Month – Best Achievement’.
In June though, one of the Health & Social Care tutors asked the Principal Derek O’Toole to add a new category for an ‘Outstanding Student’ because one of her students was just that.
20 year old Shaheen Bi, from Smallbridge Rochdale is without doubt an absolutely outstanding student; she has just completed a BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care (which is the equivalent to 3 A-levels), achieving a Distinction grade (equivalent to an A*) in 18 units.
Her tutor Caroline Edwards who put Shaheen forward for the award explains why, “All through the programme Shaheen has maintained excellent attendance and punctuality; she always submits work to distinction criteria and she has achieved a Distinction grade in all 18 assignments, which is some going!
What’s more Shaheen will completed the course 6 weeks earlier than the College end date with the equivalent to an A*.
She is a pleasure to teach, she is well mannered and polite and very receptive to advice from her subject tutors.
Shaheen does not have a ‘hard luck’ story; she is just a genuine hard working student who, I believe, will make an exceptional nurse one day.”
Shaheen also helped the community whilst studying; she completed over two hundred hours of vocational work experience at Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary. She has now secured a well-deserved place at Salford University to study a BSc in Adult Nursing; her ambition is to specialise in the adult branch of nursing.
