Golf day raises more than £2,000 for charity

Date published: 14 July 2010

Manchester Golf Club recently played host to the "Ernie Cooksey Memorial Trophy" and raised more than £2,000 to split between two charities.

The event was organised to honour Mr Cooksey’s memory and to fundraise for Rochdale Supporters Trust and Factor 50, the group who fundraise for The Christie malignant melanoma team, the disease which sadly claimed Mr Cooksey's life.

Mr Cooksey's family sent their best wishes for the day, which was played in near perfect conditions.

The teams battled it out to a very close finish with the team led by Keith Hicks, Rochdale’s ‘football in the community’ officer, narrowly triumphing to take the inaugural honours.

This was followed by a three course evening dinner with a sports memorabilia auction and the day raised in excess of £2,000 to be split between the two concerns.

Andy Worthington from Factor 50 said "We are pleased to have had such a successful day supported by L’Oreal who very kindly provided free sunscreen for the golfers. We wanted everyone to have a great time whilst making sure the sun awareness message got home."

The golf day will become an annual event and the organisers are already taking enquiries from people wishing to participate next year.
