Date published: 12 July 2010
Travellers have moved off land in Shawclough after nearly a week on the site.
Rochdale Borough Council received a complaint on Friday 2 July 2010 that travellers had moved onto land at the rear of Tulip Grove, Shawclough.
Following the complaint statutory health and welfare checks were undertaken, arrangements were made to collect refuse from the land on a daily basis, and the land where the travellers had moved off was secured prior to legal action commencing.
On Tuesday 6 July 2010 notices were served upon the travellers directing them to leave within 24 hours. The travellers failed to comply with the direction notice resulting in the travellers being summonsed to court on 7 July 2010.
A removal order was granted by the Magistrates, a copy of the order was served upon the travellers who were advised they would be evicted the following day.
The travellers moved peacefully off the land on Thursday 8 July 2010, the land was secured and tided for the weekend
A spokesperson for Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We’ll always try to work swiftly to resolve resident complaints about the presence of travellers, but we also work sensitively with the travelling community to try and avoid any hostile situations and limit the amount of disruption to them and the wider community.
“Although initially the travellers ignored our first orders to leave within 24 hours, we were successful in gaining a removal order from the Magistrates which informed them that they would face compulsory eviction the next day. Fortunately, it never came to this as the travellers moved peacefully off the land on 8 July. We promptly secured the land and gave the area a thorough cleaning.”
