Councillor against court closure
Date published: 08 July 2010

Councillor Ann Metcalfe
Councillor Ann Metcalfe has called for Rochdale Magistrates Court to remain open.
Plans had been discussed to close the court and move its workload to Bury Magistrates as the Government aimed to save £15.3m in running costs and £21.5m in maintenance costs across the justice sector.
Should the move go ahead, Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood Local Justice Area would merge with the Bury Local Justice Area.
Councillor Metcalfe raised the issue at last nights (Wednesday 7 July) Township Meeting and today said: “It would be a real shame if Rochdale lost its court and the town would lose out.
“People who work in the courts can’t protest so awareness needs to be raised. It is going to cabinet so hopefully it will stay open."
A meeting is taking place tonight at St Aidan's church, Sudden, to raise awareness and give people information on the matter. People are welcome from 5.00pm for tea with the meeting starting at 6.00pm.
