Safe in the sun
Date published: 06 July 2010
Twenty-four parents and thirty-one children enjoyed a fun-filled safety session at Kirkway Sure Start Children’s Centre to promote ‘Child Safety Week’.
The staff made good use of the beautiful weather to raise awareness of sun safety. All parents received leaflets and information on sun safety and the activities were all linked to taking precautions to avoid sun damage.
Centre manager Karen Donnely said: “Safety in the Sun was the theme of our first safety session and we were able to make the most of the warm weather to give the session a beach theme.”
She added that: “The main messages were always apply sunscreen, keep babies out of the sun and always wear a sunhat.”
Parents of the children were also taught about how to be safe in the sun. One mum said she was surprised to learn that sunscreen can be applied to children under 12 months. Parents were also given web addresses so they could look at additional information and learn more at home.
Safety in the sun is just one activity taking place at Kirkway Children’s Centre, parents and children will be receiving safety information every Wednesday afternoon at the ‘Be Healthy Stay Safe’ sessions.
