Children come together for hospice show

A number of school children from across the borough came together today (Sunday 4 July 2010) for two special concerts in aid of Springhill Hospice.

The Children’s Voices for Hospice concerts were staged at the Gracie Fields Theatre where proud parents watched their children sing their hearts out in aid of the hospice.

The theme this year was the 2010 World Cup and although England are out of the tournament it didn’t seem to bother the children who donned their football shirts and England flags.

Springhill Hospice Fundraising Manager Ian Jenkins praised all the schools which have given up their time to take part.

“I am delighted with the effort made from the schools, teachers and mums and dads and it is great to keep this hospice tradition going.

“The Children’s Voices for Hospice concert is now in its 18th year and it is the help of the schools which keep it ticking over each year.”

This is the first year the hospice has held two concerts.

The first show at 4.00pm included pupils from St. Patrick’s RC Primary, St. Vincent’s RC Primary, St Peter’s RC Primary, Our Lady & St Paul’s RC Primary, Little Heaton Primary, Holy Family RC Primary, St Luke’s C of E Primary, Sacred Heart RC Primary, Oulder Hill Community School and Middleton Junior Choir will join Rochdale Girls Choir.

Music teacher, Judith Golding from St. Vincent’s RC Primary said: “This is at least the tenth year we have done the concert, we have got about 40 children here and they all love to perform and it is lovely that we can support the hospice in this way.”

The second concert, which commences at 7.30pm, sees children from Heap Bridge Village Primary, Tonacliffe County Primary, Meanwood C of E Primary, Whittaker Moss Primary, , and Wardle High School joined by Rochdale Boys Choir.

Musicians from Rochdale Youth Wind Orchestra provided accompaniment and the concerts were hosted by Bacup-based actor, Eric Potts, best known as baker Diggory Compton in Coronation Street.
