Darnhill Summer Festival 2010

Date published: 03 July 2010

Children dressed in an array of colours took to the streets of Darnhill, Heywood today for their annual summer festival.

The Darnhill Summer Festival started at Argyle Parade and passed through nearby streets before heading up to St Margaret’s CE Primary School for an afternoon of family fun.

The theme for his year’s parade was ‘Rainbow Nation’ to celebrate the World Cup. Even though England doesn’t have anything to celebrate  just like the tournament the carnival was full of noise and colour.

Festival co-ordinator Rick Walker said: “It is a fantastic celebration with a display of the creative ingenuity of the community.

“The volunteers have been fantastic and the number of hours they have put in has been great.”

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali attended the event with this daughter, he said: “The whole event has been great especially seeing all the children and their mums and dads dressed up for such a nice day.

“The costumes are great and it looks like a lot of hard work has been put into the day. My thanks go to the organisers for cheering up the community on a Saturday afternoon.”

Heywood councillor Colin Lambert added: “Once again this is a wonderful day and it shows the Darnhill community at its best, working together, living together, playing together and enjoying themselves together.”

MP for Heywood and Middleton, Jim Dobbin summed up the day when he said: “It is exciting to be able to do this and have a great number of young people involved. It is a great family affair and it shows community cohesion at its best.”
