Boy dies in BMX accident

A 17-year-old boy has died following an accident at a BMX track in Queens Park Heywood.

The incident has been described as a ‘tragic accident.’

It is believed that the teenager was from Tameside.

A police spokesperson said: “At 4.05pm on Thursday 24 June 2010, police were called to Fairfield General Hospital following reports a 17-year-old boy had been admitted in a collapsed condition.

“Officers attended and found the boy had died.”

“It is believed the boy had fallen from his bike at a BMX park in Heywood.”

Peter Cunningham, Head of Environmental Management, Rochdale Borough Council, said:“This has been devastating for all concerned, and our thoughts are with the family at this time."

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and is investigating.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the case had been passed to the coroner.
