Free transport for Armed Forces Day
Date published: 16 June 2010
To celebrate Armed Forces Day, servicemen and women are being invited to travel for free on Greater Manchester's buses and trams with a special Saver ticket.
Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) and System One tickets will provide free travel to members of the Armed Forces ‘past and present’ on Saturday 26 June.
The one-day Saver ticket, which will allow travel on any bus and tram in Greater Manchester for the whole of Armed Forces Day, will be available from GMPTE Travelshops on production of an Armed Forces ID, Veterans Badge or Merchant Seafarers Badge from the week starting Monday 21 June.
Councillor Keith Whitmore, Chair of GMITA, said: "Building on the success of last year, I am delighted we are once again supporting this very worthwhile cause by providing members of the Armed Forces with free transport across Greater Manchester for the day."
Councillor Ian Macdonald, Vice Chair of GMITA, said: "The offer is a token of thanks and recognition for all the servicemen and women, from currently serving troops through to veterans, who have fought across the world for freedom and safety."
Gradyn Thompson, General Manager, System One Travelcards, added: "The one-day Saver ticket is a great idea and I hope many of our servicemen and women will take advantage of the offer to travel to some of the Armed Forces Day events happening in Greater Manchester."
Armed Forces Day is an annual event to show support to the Armed Forces community, past, present and future. Celebratory events will take place across the country on Saturday 26 June.
