Pupils learn about car crime

Date published: 14 June 2010

Pupils from Middleton Technology College learnt about the consequences of car crime at Heywood Fire Station recently.

Community fire-safety officer, Mick Cryer said: “The purpose of the event was to highlight to the pupils the effects of car-crime and its impact on the community as a whole.”

The pupils were given a presentation on the dangers of potentially getting in a stolen vehicle, driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs and what could happen to them if they were involved in an accident whilst not wearing a seatbelt.

The operational crews then placed two volunteer pupils in a “simulated car-crash” and cut them out using the equipment fire fighters carry on fire engines.

Stuart Howarth from Rochdale’s road safety unit then gave them some instruction on a driving simulator.

Rachel Earing, extended schools cluster co-ordinator, said: “The students have been buzzing since the presentation and they all now understand more about the implications of car crime.”
