Heywood fly the flag for fun football festival

Heywood was the place to be today (Saturday 12 June 2010) to get ready for England’s first World Cup match.

Traders in the town were ‘Flying the Flag for England’ in a boost to increase trade and give the community a fun day out leading up to the England Football team’s first group game at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa.

Heywood Business Group joined together with Heywood Market and Link4Life to provide a fun day, children enjoyed a series of activities at the Heywood Civic Concourse including a giant penalty shootout, Human Foosball, face painting and football skills coaching.

Heywood Business Group Chairman, Ian Beddoes said “It’s great to see so many traders flying the flags and supporting the England team.”

Away from the civic centre Heywood Market’s World Cup mascot was handing out £5 shopping vouchers and the Salvation Army Brass Band provided entertainment.

Mike Goldrick Window Blinds on Dawson Street, also took part in the football fun offering face painting, ‘Splat the Rat’ and Shove Ha’penny.

Outside Beddoes Home Furnishings on Market Street, Roch Valley Hospital Radio were playing hits from the World Cup years rousing the fans for the match which kicks off at 7.30pm.
