Rochdale football fans urged to be 'World Cup heroes'

Date published: 10 June 2010

Greater Manchester Police is urging football fans in Rochdale to be World Cup heroes by drinking responsibly and avoiding trouble.

The advice comes ahead of England’s first group match against the USA in Rustenburg Stadium in South Africa on Saturday 12 June at 7.30pm.

Chief Inspector Alec McMurchy said: “The World Cup is an exciting time for everyone and I know that fans across Rochdale will visit their local bar, pubs and clubs to watch the matches with friends.

“While we want everyone to enjoy the games we don’t want anyone to come to harm. It’s very easy to get caught up in the emotion of the match and coupled with excess drink, decision making can be impaired and at times people’s judgement and safety can be compromised.

“You can stay safe by pacing your drinks and alternating them with soft drinks, stay with groups of friends, avoid travelling alone, use a licensed taxi or designate a group member as a driver. These simple tips can save you from potential harm.

“I would like to send out a stern reminder to revellers that while World Cup celebrations are welcomed we won’t tolerate bad behaviour and will act robustly if necessary.”

Stuart Ashworth for Rochdale AFC, said: “The club welcomes and supports this initiative as it supports the World Cup to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.”
