Rochdale man in tobacco sales ban
Date published: 07 June 2010
A shopkeeper from Rochdale has become the first person in the country to be banned from selling tobacco products after two 15-year-old and a 16-year-old bought cigarettes at his newsagents.
Aqeel Ahmed, 24, owner of Central News in Blackpool, was banned for 40 days from selling tobacco, fined £125 and ordered to pay £100 costs. He did not attend the hearing or oppose the ban.
The sanction comes after he sold 20 cigarettes each on three occasions to underage test purchasers sent to the shop by Blackpool Council Trading Standards in April, May and August 2009.
