Proxy sales tackled in Castleton

Date published: 07 June 2010

An initiative to tackle proxy sales of alcohol in Castleton has been deemed successful.

A proxy sale is defined as a person over 18 years of age who purchases alcohol on behalf of a minor.

The scheme led by Rochdale Council's Licensing Team and Greater Manchester Police took place in March and April - early results indicate that the initiative has been successful.

Preliminary figures indicate that there has been a 54% reduction in incidents involving youth relating drinking and 76% reduction in youth related anti-social-behaviour within Castleton Ward. (Figures based on number of incidents April 2010 compared to April 2009).

The preliminary results of the campaign have been communicated to The Residents of Castleton via the Castleton Area Forum.

A spokesperson for the Licensing Authority said: “The Licensing Authority are committed to reducing levels of juvenile drinking across the Borough and will continue to promote the clear message that purchasing alcohol on behalf of a minor is an offence which carries a penalty of up to a £5000 fine upon conviction.”
