Tesco recruits celebrate new jobs

Date published: 03 June 2010

Over 100 new Tesco recruits were honoured last week after securing jobs in the new Tesco extra store in Middleton.

A scheme offering work to unemployed people out of work for six months or more attracted over 1000 people to an open day, and more than 600 to interviews. In the end, 106 were chosen and recently underwent a five-week retail course including rigorous numeracy and literacy training. In this period they also raised over £1000 for charity.

“It’s fair to say for many it was a little out of their comfort zone, but the wonderful thing is that they all got stuck in, supported each other and showed real commitment,” said Jo Frith, Tesco Partnership Manager. “My colleague has described the last few weeks as like finding buried treasure. I have been really impressed and we’re all looking forward to getting started in the new store now!”

At their ‘graduation’ ceremony, staff celebrated through sing and dance and Councillor Peter Williams, Chair of Middleton Township sung the initiative’s praises: “The new Tesco Extra store is key part of the regeneration of Middleton, and has already given a great opportunity to a lot of people. I hope it will do so for many more in the future too. This scheme has given local people the support and training they need to harness their potential and talent.”

The store will open on 5 July 2010.
