Charity walk for mountain rescue team

Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team are organising a charity 42-mile hike to raise money to continue funding their work across 350 square miles of East Lancashire, including parts of Greater Manchester.

The walk which takes place on Saturday 3 July will cover parts of Whitworth and Rooley Moor.

The Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team assist injured walkers, runners and climbers and help search for vulnerable people in collaboration with the police. In excess of £30,000 is required annually to keep the volunteer scheme going.

Last year the walk raised £2,500 and Ken Crossley hopes that it will be an even greater success this year.

Mr Crossley said: "The Rossendale Way in a Day is magnificent walk that goes through some fantastic countryside and some great industrial heritage.

“We hope to see many new faces taking part this year, as well as old friends who have done the trek before, and that they will raise more funds through sponsorship than ever before so we can continue providing this vital emergency service for local people."

The walk usually takes between 12 and 18 hours, and entrants cover more than one and a half times the route up Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. There is alternatively a Half Way linear walk which covers 25 miles.

Participants of the full walk must be aged over 16, and if under 18 must be accompanied by a named adult. For the Half Way walk, people as young as 12 can take part.
