Third place for Milnrow Band

The Co-operative Milnrow Band came third place at the Whit Friday Contest in Saddleworth, winning over £1,000 prize money.

The band did a tour of the Saddleworth villages playing “Ravenswood” by William Rimmer.

Band President Ken Watts said: “We are pleased that our results compared favourably with previous years, particularly as musical director for the evening Andrew White was a replacement after the band had recently parted company with its regular musical director and the choice of march music had been altered.”

Over the past few years the band has been consistent in winning mainly local prizes at these contests.

Mr Watts added: “The band usually get around to playing at 5 or 6 venues, but this year we were on the road early at 3.30pm arriving at Delph before the start time and in time to be 4th band on, with such a good start we made fairly good time and finished with the last and 9th performance (almost in the dark) at Denshaw at about eleven o/clock, exiting to a standing ovation.

“So once again the band picks up a bob or two in prize money and keep the name of Co-operative Milnrow Band to the fore as one of the premier brass bands in the district.”
