Volunteering for the police

The Animal Welfare team at GMPA
As part of Volunteers’ week in the UK, which aims to raise the profile of millions of volunteers countrywide, Greater Manchester Police Association (GMPA) explains how its voluntary workers play such a valuable role.
GMPA Councillor Paul Murphy said: "I think a lot of people will be surprised to learn that we have a team of volunteers helping the Police Authority deliver an efficient and effective police service.
"Volunteers' Week provides a perfect opportunity to highlight the work of those volunteers and encourage other local people to get involved too."
It set up schemes in 2009 and now has more than 100 volunteers spread around three areas: Animal Welfare Visiting, Appropriate Adult and Independent Custody Visiting.
The animal inspectors come in and monitor how dogs and horses are being treated, and address any problems in conjunction with GMPA if necessary. Similarly, the Independent Custody Visitors check on the living conditions and treatment of detainees and report back to the police. Appropriate Adults assist when a young offender is arrested and has no parent or guardian, and support them throughout their case.
Recruitment for Appropriate Adults and Independent Custody Visitors is ongoing, but positions working the animals are currently closed.
All volunteers undergo training and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
