Teachers join police patrols to tackle anti-social behaviour

Officers from Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team will be tackling anti-social behaviour throughout the summer in a series of joint patrols with staff from Middleton Technology School.

The senior teachers from the specialist technology school will be supporting police during the seasonal break in a collaborative effort to get youngsters off the streets and into extra curricular activities.

Police and teachers from the school first took part in joint patrols last year. They would visit student haunts to identify and move on youths taking part in anti-social behaviour before advising them of a range of activities promoted by youth services.

Sergeant Peter Hargreaves for the Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The fact that the school is putting in such a large amount of support to the children is great news to police as it shows that the two groups are working together to achieve the same goal and also means that we’re more equipped to find a solution to the problems.”

Figures from the recent half term break showed that anti-social behaviour caused by youths reduced by 28 incidents compared to the previous year when there were 80 incidents. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has hailed much of the success of the results down to the partnership work with the school.

David Roberts, deputy head of Middleton Technology School, said: “The school has gained considerably from the project as students and parents see us working together to make the community a safer place for everyone.”
