Children’s ‘treasures’ buried in time capsule

Date published: 30 May 2010

Children at Kentmere Primary will make their mark on history by burying a time capsule at their primary school which is currently being rebuilt.

Around 20 year 5 and 6 pupils have collected a range of items such as photographs, newspapers, coins and personal messages which they buried in a special treasure chest.

In liaison with the contractor (ROK), the time capsule has been laid in the structure of the new building to give a snapshot of life for Kentmere pupils in 2010.

Headteacher Carmel Seston said: "The pupils in Miss Gartside's class have undertaken this project to repesent Kentmere Primary past, present and future. At the site visit and official burial of the capsule, the children interviewed builders and contractor at the site to see how their new school was progressing as they can't wait to move in at the end of the year."

Kentmere will be the first new build school to be completed under the Primary Capital Programme for Rochdale and Impact Partnership are managing the project on behalf of the council. Whilst the building is under construction, a temporary home for the school has been provided at Great Howarth, from where the pupils and staff have visited the Kentmere site to watch the progress on their new school.

The new school will have a modern timber frame construction, which reduces construction timetables, solar powered energy generated on site and will have a ‘state of the art’ ICT infrastructure to support the pupils and management of the school. All this new technology will deliver sustainable benefits in terms of lifecycle costs and efficiencies.

The new school, which will be completed by November 2010, is the first school that has been commissioned in Rochdale to use this technology and once finished, the £2.7m project will accommodate 280 pupils and staff.
