Lock out burglars
Date published: 24 May 2010
The days might be longer but residents are getting a stern reminder by police to lock their windows and doors to keep burglars out.
Between 1 June and 31 August 2009, there were 449 reports of burglary in the Borough. Twenty seven per cent of those were a result of insecurities where gates, doors or windows had been left open or unlocked.
Inspector Michelle Hughes, for Rochdale Division, said: “We know that during the summer when the weather is warmer people like to open their windows and doors but this provides easy pickings for thieves. Our advice to the public is to ensure that all vulnerable windows and doors are kept locked - even when you are at home.
“Our research shows that even during the summer months one in three burglaries happen as a result of people leaving their windows open like this and by simply locking doors and windows you can prevent yourself becoming a victim of crime. Also keeping valuables out of sight and storing garden furniture and equipment in a secure shed can reduce your chances of having items of your property stolen.”
