One of St Cuthbert’s R.C high school’s football teams came close to winning a national tournament, but was beaten by a goal to nil.

The year 7 football team made it to the final two of 702 teams competing in the English Schools Football Association (ESFA) cup final.

St Cuthbert’s played against Whitgift School from Croydon, London

They played the game of their lives in the final at Stamford Bridge, the home ground of Chelsea Football Club on Monday 17 May.

Team manager and P.E teacher, Mr McLachlan is pleased with the team’s success, he said: “The boys did us proud! They worked their socks off, wore their hearts on their sleeves and just couldn't manage to break the other team down.

“The other team were physically bigger and quicker so the effort the boys put in to make it such a close contest was fantastic. We won a free kick on the edge of the box in the closing minutes which narrowly missed.

“It was a great day and the memories and experiences will influence for years to come.”

Centre back Ross Mallinson was named man of the match.
