Rainbows Go Wild

More than 300 youngsters attended ‘Rainbows Go Wild’ at Heybrook Primary School to celebrate the 100th birthday of Girl Guiding UK.

The children, aged between 5 and 7 years old, enjoyed a day packed full of fun based around a zoo theme.

Rainbow groups from Rochdale, Heywood, Oldham and Bury took part in activities including, arts and crafts, cake baking, dancing and even ‘I’m a Rainbow Get Me Out of Here.’

Rainbow guide Suzanne Halkyard said: “Today has been brilliant, it has been a beautiful day and it couldn’t have gone any better.

“The turnout has been fantastic and wandering round here today it is like a sea of red with all the rainbows running around. I think all the children have really enjoyed themselves.”

Ms Halkyard added: “All the leaders and volunteers today have done a great job and we could not host this event without them.”

The theme nationally was based on zoos and across the country Rainbows have taken day trips to zoos but Rainbows in Lancashire South East had the zoo brought to them.

The children were treated to activities in eight zones across the school site and were split into groups of between twenty and thirty rainbows, spending twenty minutes in each zone.
Organiser Lyndsey Hendry said: “What a brilliant day! Rainbows love making things and I think all the girls have had a ball. The rainbows have certainly gone wild.”

The new Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali was also present at the event, he said: “It fascinates me what I have seen here today. Girl Guiding UK has done a wonderful job to get all the children here.

“It is a beautiful day and I think the children are all thrilled and have enjoyed themselves.

"A massive thanks must go to the organisers. I think they should be encouraged to do more events like this.”
