NHS staff show their star quality

Date published: 17 May 2010

NHS staff Laura Hadfield and Helen Chapman have been rewarded for going the extra mile as part of a reward scheme called Going for Gold Stars.

Ms Hadfield won the commissioning category for the continued support she gives to the finance team. Ms Chapman won the provider category.

A spokeswoman for NHS Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale said: "When a colleague had a last minute deadline to meet, Laura set about helping her to work on it and even came in the next day on her day off. She often works additional hours to complete tasks without complaining and is always willing to help others.

"Helen stood out for the passion and commitment she has shown to the learning disabilities team, helping disabled people to gain work and supporting the development of a Learning Disabilities Patient Experience Group to provide valuable feedback from patients to help develop the service."

On winning the award, Ms Hadfield said: “I’m really pleased to be nominated and it’s nice to know that your colleagues appreciate the work that you do. I try to muck in where I can to make sure things get done.”

Ms Chapman commented: “It was a great surprise to be nominated and I’m really thrilled to actually win! The Learning Disabilities Patient Experience Group really helps our team to communicate more effectively with our clients and I’m delighted that it’s been given some recognition.”

Going for Gold Stars was established using staff lottery money as a way or recognising staff who go the extra mile either to support their team, the public or patients. It will link into NHS HMR’s annual staff awards scheme, Going for Gold, which also includes a patient-nominated award and volunteer of the year.
