Church of England looks for vicar to serve at UK’s first Media City

Date published: 13 May 2010

The Diocese of Manchester is looking for an experienced vicar to act as chaplain to MediaCityUK and develop a project, called the Anchor, at the multi-million pound site.

MediaCityUK is a new 220 acre new media hub for the UK, near Salford Quays and situated at the end of the 34 mile long Manchester Ship Canal. There are a total of four media cities in the world, MediaCityUK will be the fifth. When fully opened in Salford, it will operate on the regional, national and international stage, shaping communications nationally for decades to come.

Currently the site houses the UK’s biggest HD film stage and is home to the North West Film Office. In 2011 the University of Salford will open a building in the development and by 2012 the BBC will have five buildings and key departments based there including Children’s Television, Religion and Ethics, Five Live, Panorama, BBC Sport, File on 4 and BBC Learning.

David Marshall, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Manchester, said; “ We hope to attract someone who can play a full part in developing this project by working with local residents and new members of the community, by helping mainstream churches relate to the media and the business community, by working with schools and the Chaplaincy team from the University of Salford. The chaplain will be based at MediaCityUK in a space called The Anchor and will be part of a team which includes communicators, clergy, business people and local residents.”
