Major repairs to begin on M60

Date published: 29 April 2010

Major roadworks to resurface a troubled stretch of the M60 motorway start next weekend.

The work is on six miles of the last section of the Manchester outer ring road to be completed 10 years ago, between Middleton and Denton, running through Chadderton and Hollinwood.

The cost of building the 10-mile, final link which opened in 2000, was £272 million.

Despite being only a decade old, the motorway surface has suffered from drainage problems and cracking which begins deep beneath the carriageway.

The Highways Agency spokesman said: “The majority of the work will take place between 9pm on Friday evenings and 5am on Monday mornings when traffic volumes are lighter and disruption to drivers can be kept to a minimum.

“Work will be avoided during Bank Holidays and when there are any significant events that would create heavy traffic.”

The work will continue until December.

The first period of work goes on until July.

It begins on 7 May with 40 mph speed limits, lane closures, and slip road closures at exits between junctions 19 and 21.

On Fridays and Saturdays the closures are from 10 pm to 5 am to following day, and 1-5am through the week .

Overhead message signs will be used to provide information Agency’s Traffic Officers will patrol the area to move breakdowns or accidents.
