Community action in Castleton

Date published: 28 April 2010

Castleton Community Centre is rightly considered by the people of Castleton as a jewel and is well used for all kinds of leisure activities and of course the library.

As the centre is the most noticeable polling station for Castleton, it was in desperate need of tidying up before next Thursday's election.

Sylvia and Rod Barry, who daily face the sight of the unkempt flower beds on their doorstep decided that actions speak louder than words.

A phone call to Frank Salt, who is standing as an independent in the local election, set the time and date and the clean up was done.

Mr Barry said: "I walk past Castleton Community Centre everyday and it’s a disgrace, the council ought to do something about it, but they won’t, so I thought I would do something myself."

Frank Salt commented: "Rod told me what they were going to do and I was more than pleased to help them out in anyway I could.

"As we worked, several passers by commented along the lines 'its about time that mess was sorted out' and 'why don't the council look after the centre, they seem to have enough money in other areas to keep community centres looking good'?"

Mr Salt added: "It is a pity we can't rely so called 'representatives' on the Council, Councillor Peter Davison and Councillors Pat and Ted Flynn, to press the council to fulfil even this most basic of tasks, keeping the public buildings in Castleton clean and tidy, but thankfully we have public-spirited citizens like Rod and Sylvia who are concerned enough to take action."
