School children get lessons in bruises and burns

Diploma students learn about some of the interesting jobs they can get when they go out to work.

Students from local schools went to Hopwood Hall College to take part in a real action-packed learning day. The students are currently studying the Higher Diploma in Hair and Beauty that the Image Department at Hopwood Hall College is delivering in local schools.
The day was set up to allow them to meet with various representatives from the industry so that they could learn about some of the really interesting jobs they can get when they go out to work.

Diplomas are new qualifications for 14 – 19 year olds; the main aim of them is to ‘bring learning to life’ and to allow the learners to taste the world of work, which they certainly did.

The day got off to a messy start with a science activity in which the learners made a model of the skin structure from jelly, cream, trifle and lots of sweets. This was great fun and really stretched the learners (as well as a few waist bands!).

They then met Justine Robinson, a media make up expert, who delivered a fantastic overview of opportunities within TV and film, plus demonstrated how to create a third degree burn and bruising. The school children really enjoyed this; Justine showed passion and enthusiasm for the industry and really inspired the students. Although a bit gory, the demonstration was brilliant and the students got to work creating bruises with make-up on each other.

Next on the agenda was a nail art session. The students were asked to take a flag/country from the lucky dip and then recreate the design on an artificial nail tip, using nail art techniques. The group produced amazing results and went on to create their own designs which showed off their true talent.

To round the day off, Caroline Bashir, an African Caribbean Hair Specialist, talked to the group about how to get the most from African Caribbean hair. This was extremely informative and complemented the work the groups have been doing. Caroline gave the students an insight into looking after the hair and how to get the most from it. The students were really interested in this and asked lots of questions, all of which Caroline answered along with giving great hints and tips.

Throughout the day there were mini competitions, games and fun activities which added to the success of the day. All in all, the students had an excellent day and got some great inspiration as to exciting variety of careers they might have when they grow up.
