Fundraiser for sportsman following 'freak accident'

Date published: 24 April 2010

The friends of a man who was blinded in one eye whilst playing rugby are throwing a fundraiser for him.

Wayne Jopson, 31, was injured in what he described as a ‘freak accident’ playing for Mayfield Rugby League in February this year.

Mr Jopson has lost sight in his right eye and this week will have a temporary false eye fitted. He said: “It happened when in a tackle and was just a freak accident. It has been important to stay positive.

“There are worst things that can happen and I have good health and a good left eye!”

Friends of Mr Jopson are throwing the fundraiser on Sunday 16 May at the Mayfield Rugby Club, Castleton, starting at 3pm the event will include a variety of singers and entertainment.

Aidy McDermott has arranged the event with the help of team mates from the Copperpot football team, formally the Dog and Partridge where Mr Jopson, known to his team mates as ‘Joppy’ was captain for many years.

Mr McDermott said: “I have watched Wayne grow up. I have been playing football with him since he was 15.

“I would class myself as a very good friend of Wayne and his dad they are two really nice fellas and I just thought we should sort something out and do something for Wayne.”

“He has struggled to find work at the moment and we just want to do all we can to help him. All the money raised will go to Joppy.”

Mr McDermott also hopes to hold a charity football match in the future to raise more funds for Mr Jopson.

Wayne’s father, Ian is delighted with the efforts from Wayne’s friends, he said: “It is brilliant that everybody has come together for Wayne. The rugby club will be holding a family day in late June as well.

“I would really like to thank everybody involved.”

The gig will include performances from Mr McDermott, his brother Brendan Decko, singer Andy Lee and many more.

There are still tickets available for the event. Call Aidy McDermott on 07722426335 for more information.
