St John’s School centenary celebrations
Yesterday was the centenary of the St John’s school building. The building was officially opened on St George’s day in 1910. We celebrated by having a non-uniform day with a purpose and all children and staff dressing in their most traditional ‘Sunday best’ outfits. We had a special Mass celebrated by Father Chris first thing and then class photographs were taken. The photos will go on our web-site and also on the life channel which can be viewed in the school entrance and on our school playground screen. The children made flags to wave based upon the English George cross but overlayed in the corner with the flag that their family may be associated with or their country of birth.
The photographs and other items suggested by the children will go into a time capsule to be secured in the new extension to the school and to opened in 100 years time from now! The plan is that work will commence on the new extension in the Summer exactly 100 years on from the official opening of the original building.
The children decorated ( and ate !) buns with red, white and blue icing to celebrate the day.
Rights Respecting School Award Congratulations to all at St Johns on the achievement of gaining the Rights Respecting School Award. We were assessed by a UNICEF representative at the end of last term and soon after we received the excellent news that we had achieved level one. The award shows that we are committed at all times to:
- Equal rights
- Mutual respect
- Shared responsibility
- . . . in our school, in our community, in our country and in our world
