African culture fun in Rochdale

An afternoon of colourful fun filled traditional African music and dance was performed today (Saturday 17 April 2010) in front of the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale.

Mayor, Councillor Keith Swift and the Mayoress Susan Etchells were treated to a vibrant welcome at the Castlemere Community Centre on Tweedale Street before watching a performance of cultural dancing.

The African Cultural Event, 2010 was organised by the Dynamic Ladies of Greater Manchester who are based in Rochdale and aim to bring together African women and to promote African culture.

Chairwoman Yvonne Ramses-Ngwa said: “This is out first activity this year and we want to express ourselves and let the local community know about us.

“Today is all about meeting others and networking. We want people to discover Africa, including our music, our dancing and our food.”

“We want people to have an enjoyable day, be happy and smile.”

A range of stalls were on display for people in the area to learn about Africa, they included clothes stalls, henna art, hair braiding, language, crafts and food.

Anne Gordon came to see the dancing, she said: “I feel quite under dressed; it is so bright and colourful in here. They ladies are all very welcoming.

“I have found today very interesting and there has been a lovely atmosphere.”

Mayor Swift said: “It is great to be here on a lovely sunny say. We received a splendid welcome which we didn’t expect, it was brilliant.

“It is good to see so everyone here together this afternoon. Thanks must go to Yvonne for all her hard work, without which things wouldn’t get done. The Dynamic Ladies play a huge part in the Rochdale community.

“It is always lovely to see them, and they are really brightening the place up with their wonderful smiles. It is a pleasure to be here.”
