Bigamy case goes to Crown Court

Date published: 15 April 2010

A Rochdale man accused of bigamy has had his case committed to Carlisle Crown Court.

Fazlur Rahman, 42, who ran Taste of India in Cockermouth, Fazz’s in Workington and Red Fort in Keswick, appeared at West Allerdale Magistrates Court last Friday and was bailed to appear in Carlisle on 10 May.

Rahman’s solicitor Barry Cuttle asked the court to switch his client’s bail address from Rochdale to Bowness-on-Solway but Judge Chalk refused the move.

Rahman previously appeared before magistrates on Friday 26 March, when he entered no plea on the bigamy charge and pleaded not guilty to an immigration offence.

Rahman is accused of marrying Jill Gregg, on 25 March 2006, while married to Farzana-Sharhrin Tania, from Sylhet, Bangladesh.

He is also accused of making a false return, statement or representation on 23 June 2008, at Cockermouth to an immigration office and making a false statement about living with Farzana-Sharhrin Tania as husband and wife and intending to do so permanently.
