A thief stole a car with a four-month-old baby still in the back following a robbery at a post office in Middleton.

Four men have been arrested.

Shortly before 1pm today, Wednesday 13 February, four men burst into the Mainway Post Office in Kirkway, Middleton.

The offenders, all of whom were wearing hoods while one carried a metal bar, demanded cash and were handed bags of money.

They then escaped in a stolen silver Volvo, which was later abandoned in Walker Road, Blackley.

A short time later, a woman was dragged out of her Citroen car and a man got into it and drove away.

Her four-month-old baby girl was in the back of the car, which stopped on Hilltop Avenue, Blackley.

The baby was found by police safe and well.

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of robbery. One of them has also been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and all are currently in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Jeff McMahon, of Rochdale CID said: "The woman whose car was driven away with her baby inside was extremely shaken. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in or around the Post Office in Middleton at the time, or who saw the offenders flee, to contact police."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4646 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
