Greater Manchester Crimestoppers supports National Tackling Drugs Week

Date published: 11 June 2009

Crimestoppers is asking Greater Manchester to help police rid communities of drugs by passing on information on drug related crime. The campaign coincides with the Home Office led initiative, National Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Week (8-13 June).

Gary Murray, regional manager for the North West area of Crimestoppers said; ‘Nationally around 50% of the information that is passed to Crimestoppers is about drug offences, so the public are clearly concerned about drugs in their communities.

‘In the last 12 months in Greater Manchester, Crimestoppers received over 5000 calls and over 2700 of these were about drugs. This led to 292 arrests, which is an excellent ratio and demonstrates that the people of Greater Manchester will not tolerate drugs and the problems that come with it.

‘Drug related crime impacts on communities by creating more drug addicts and further fuel additional crimes, which brings further dangers to communities. The people of Manchester can use this week to help us stamp out drugs and crime in your area by contacting us with information.

Nationally between April 2008 and March 2009

More than 50 per cent of those arrested and charged were made with the help of Crimestoppers information were for drug related offences (3666)

Over £19 million worth of drugs has been seized with the help of Crimestoppers information.

Crimestoppers received almost 38000 pieces of actionable information about drugs offences.

Crimestoppers is asking for members of the public to pass on any information they may have about drug related crimes by telephoning 0800 555 111.
