Station gates project completed at Heywood Station

Date published: 06 April 2009

Heywood railway station has benefited from a new set of car park gates, greatly enhancing the appearance of the station entrance for visitors.

The design of the new gates has been based on some of the iron work railings surrounding Bury's Bolton Street station, which date back to the 1840’s when the railway was built.

The funding for the new gates was a joint initiative between Rochdale Council and the East Lancashire Light Railway Company Ltd.

Stephen Holt, Station Master at Heywood, said: “The new gates will be a welcome addition and will improve the overall appearance of the station and its grounds. I am extremely grateful to the local authority and ELLR Co. Board for the additional funding required on the project.

"I am also indebted to Mr Malcolm Vickers the railway's Commercial and Development Director for his assistance in delivering this project.'

ELR General Manager Andy Coward said: “Improving the appearance of all of our stations is an important aspect of developing the railway and the new gates at Heywood are a huge improvement that will hopefully by appreciated by visitors to the station and the railway.”
